Abstract

Mohammad Ali Jauhar, an Indian Muslim activist and major political figure, died in London in , but was buried at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, with the assent of the President of the Supreme Islamic Council, Amin Al-Husseini. The move was welcomed by Arabs and Muslims, aided by the British and opposed by Jews. This paper examines the reasons for this burial, explaining Jauhar's role in supporting the Palestinian cause and consolidating Indian- Palestinian relations. The study assumes that were Jauhar not a Muslim, he would have paid little attention to the cause of Palestine, far away from his own country, especially as he was concerned with pressing national and patriotic issues. The incident is thus an illustration of the importance of the Al-Aqsa Mosque not only to the Palestinians but to the entire Muslim world.
