Abstract

This study deals with Hichem Djaït’s early French writings on history and philosophy. It is represented in two articles related to the era of rulers in Ifriqiya, and two books; The Arab-Islamic Character and Arab Destiny, and Europe and Islam: The Clash of Culture and Modernity. These works are analysed to demonstrate the accuracy of the historian, the extent of his knowledge on the philosophy of history, and the aspirant’s view of a better reality, although he does not hide his pessimism about the present at times. The books also range between the past, the present, and the future, seeking to employ history in their reading the present, in order to build an Arab culture committed to the values of modernity and secularism
