Abstract

The 19th and early 20th century Moroccan road network, especially the Tangier-Tetouan Road, has not received much attention from researchers. This study thus highlights the condition and status of this road network and its role in Moroccan history. The study reviewed the main roads in Morocco before colonialism, then touched on the main axis of the Tangier-Tetouan road. The paper reviews the writings of European travelers and explorers, before exploring the facilities on this road such as the Ain El Jadida Hotel, and the protection system that the tribes provided to travelers, and finally unpacking the events that took place on the Tangier - Tetouan road in the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, during the Spanish occupation of northern Morocco.
